Not every off-the-beaten-track destination needs a 4WD. These places can be reached by car, ferry or plane, yet see a fraction of the visitors of Australia's headline attractions. Each rewards slow travel.

The Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges are South Australia's largest mountain ranges, stretching more than 430 km north from near Port Pirie. They are the Country of the Adnyamathanha people. Their best-known landmark is Wilpena Pound, or Ikara, a vast natural amphitheatre. The ranges also preserve some of the oldest fossil evidence of animal life. Read the Flinders Ranges.

Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island lies in the Tasman Sea, about 600 km east of Port Macquarie. It is World Heritage listed for its natural beauty and unique wildlife, and visitor numbers are deliberately limited. Read Lord Howe Island.

Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island, about 112 km southwest of Adelaide. It is known for sea lions, wild coastline and Flinders Chase National Park. Read Kangaroo Island.

Why go off the beaten track?

  • Fewer crowds: more space, quieter trails and better wildlife encounters.
  • Local communities: your spending supports small towns and businesses.
  • Seasonal flexibility: many of these places are pleasant outside peak holiday periods.

When to go

The Flinders Ranges are most comfortable in the cooler months, roughly April to October. Lord Howe Island and Kangaroo Island are popular in the warmer months, but rewarding year-round, with fewer visitors outside school holidays.

Travel lightly

Fragile environments need care. Stay on tracks, follow biosecurity rules, especially on islands, and take your rubbish home. On Lord Howe and Kangaroo Island, follow rules designed to protect native wildlife and prevent the spread of pests and diseases.

More places off the beaten track

Australia has many more overlooked places worth exploring. In Western Australia, the south coast between Albany and Esperance has empty beaches and national parks. In Queensland, the Channel Country comes alive after floods. In Tasmania, the west coast and the Tarkine offer rainforest and wild rivers. In New South Wales, the far west around Broken Hill and Mungo National Park has outback heritage and ancient landscapes.

Responsible travel

Small communities can be stretched by visitors, especially in peak seasons. Buy locally, respect local customs and ask before taking photographs of people. Many remote places rely on tourism, and thoughtful visitors are always welcome.

Getting there for less

Travelling outside school holidays, booking flights and ferries early and staying a little longer in each place can reduce costs. Self-catering and camping are other ways to keep budgets down, and they often bring you closer to nature.
