If you are willing to travel on local buses, there are buses from Antofagasta to Calama where you can change to a bus to San Pedro, and there are occasional buses from Antofagasta direct. The buses are good, and the transfer is pretty easy. LAN offers flights to Antofagasta which is also served by good quality long-distance buses south to Santiago or north to Peru. A tiny bit of Spanish is useful, but in general traveling in Chile independently is really easy, reasonably fast, and a whole lot cheaper than travel with a tour company. One tour company traveling to SPdA stays at the stunning, and stunningly expensive, Explora hotel on the outskirts of the town.

Hi Tam @ Smith Travel Blog,
I'm sorry for the late reply! Seeing how you have already been to San Pedro than we can both relate to the vast amount of water one must consume there! Or at least until you climatise yourself. We stayed at the Casa de Don Tomas, a very nice hotel and extremely quite. Our room didn't have a television or anything so needless to say we were able to read and write much more than usual. We would love to go back one day, I was pleasantly surprised at how much there was to do there, especially being way out in the desert.

What amazing pictures - I was in San Pedro in 1996 whilst working in Santiago. I remember it being so hot during the day that just walking from hostel to local bar required a gallon of water. I've heard recently that there is a nice hotel in San Pedro - where did you stay Rob?

Great pictures! The deep and saturated colors get me everytime. I loved the picture of the children, they just seem so happy and festive. Makes me want to travel ASAP.
