With the demise of the free SMS / TXT service provided by Intazaar, several Australian readers of my blogs have asked which service I can recommend to replace it. I’ve tried quite a few including Motocrew, SMS Pup, but the best one was clearly Youtext.com.au but it doesn’t work anymore either
One of my readers Henry suggested BlueSkyfrog which has a 5 free SMS per day deal if you agree to get their email newsletter once a month.
When you signup BlueSkyfrog will send 2 separate confirmation codes to your mobile and email which you need to enter before it works. One bonus is that when you send someone a free SMS it appears to come from your phone so they can reply directly to you.
The character limit is 130 because they add this text at the end of each SMS “(free SMS @ blueskyfrog.com)”
To date I haven’t had any problem sending SMS’s to any Australian mobile network – they usually arrive at the destination within a few seconds, and there is no specific per day limit I can find.
Like Intazaar, Youtext shows your number as the sender when you send the SMS so any replies will go to your mobile phone, but unlike Intazaar only 140 characters are available for your message. The rest of the characters are reserved for a short promotional message from Youtext.

Hi, if you make it so that people can leave their URLs I’ll add you to the Blogs that follow list! They need to be able to make a link out of their name! Thanks!
EDITOR: done
With the VOIP provider Pennytel you get free local and international SMS once you put some credit – even $5 in
EDITOR: thanks for the tip off Matthew
Thanks for the tip! I’m trying to save money right now (for an overseas trip) and this is perfect for my new frugal ways
I’ve found there is a limit on youtext though, to specific numbers. They call it “sms spam”, it basically only lets you send 5 sms to a specific number a day.
EDITOR: thanks for spotting that Jono, I hadn’t sent that many txts to one person in the same day to be able to spot the limitation.
Useful for me to send SMS to my friends in australia… thanks
EDITOR: that wont work. To register for Youtext you have to tell them your Australian mobile number, they send you an SMS with an activation code to that number and you have to enter the activation code into the Youtext website
i registered with all the correct details, my mob no. is australian yet i still haven’t received my sms confirmation, how long does it usually take?
EDITOR: It took barely a few seconds to register my own mobile and other family members mobiles.
If it didn’t work for you i’d suggest emailing them to find out
how come intazaar doesn’t work?
are there any other websites?
when i create an account it says something went wrong
i put it all correct details.unles my email cannot have a hyphen in it?
Please try again.
Hi there,
I’ve used alot of the freesms sites and they all have their pros & cons… i am currently testing out SMSFUN so far seems to be good, i switch between it and youtext
Matt
EDITOR: SMSFUN is not free. AFAIK it charges your mobile bill $2 / week
I think Im in Matt’s boat as well I get the same problem ’something went wrong
Please try again.’ My email also has a hyphen in it. Can anyone confirm this?
same here something went wrong
services are down while Youtext do an upgrade
I used to use http://www.youtext.com.au all the time but, yeah it’s broken.
Now I use http://www.BlueSkyFrog.com it’s for Australia/New Zealand, and you can message overseas, all free, the only thing is you can only have 5 messages per day.
(Also, I know that blueskyfrog is totally free, because I haven’t had credit for months, and it’s always worked. Really quick sending too, I used to find http://www.youtext.com.au took a while.)
Yo.
EDITOR: Thanks for the tip Henry
I updated my article with the Blueskyfrog details
I have just started using me2mobile (http://www.me2mobile.com) and it provides the usual credit based web sms. In addition it provides a unique self service portal for setting up premium sms services.
Hey, I was a blueskyfrog user some years ago and loved it. Does anyone know what happened to the original founder, or if he is working on anything else?
Hi, I’m using yakedi.com.au for free sms, no problems. Would like to know if anyone has a free sms to group numbers.
Yakedi.com.au
It gives you 10 free texts at a maximum of 160 characters a day and plus it shows your number like a normal text instead of the ones like blueskyfrog.com that after every sms this follows – (Free SMS@Blueskyfrog.com). Yakedi looks like your actually using your phone
i started out using http://www.smspup.com – which is good but you need points by clickking on their emailss which is a bit of a pain because yu dont get them that often but you get points just for starting up
i then went on to use http://www.blueskyfrog.com – which is alright but when you use it for a while they start to only give you 2 free sms per day
thenn i found http://www.freesmsmate.com.au – which is good you get 5 free per day and also like 25 points for staryting up but to send the sms you hav to click on one of their sponsors and sometimess there is none but usually there is also you can send free txts to the uk from this site and you can delay when it is sent
noww i use http://www.yakedi.com – i found it to be the best one (easiest) you used to get unlimited txts but they have changed it now to 10 per day. you can now txt to australia and new zealand butt when i run out of them for the day i go to smspup coz thats the easiest one to logon n such
hopee this is useful =]
Hi Yakedi was really great, (just like sent from a phone etc). They forced a big lengthy questionnaire of me, pages of it, and now I have a reduced the daily quota to 3 per day. Prior it was 10. I reckon if you don’t continuously click on the advertising OR click the optional radio button to decide if you wanted to append “Yakedi=FreeSMS” on the end of your message ; then they reduce the quota, severely. Am down to 3 a day, fairly poor offering now.
yakedi only let u send 3 a day now but u can up that by using earn more etc, watch for offers, the ones u accumulate u can use anytime u can also earn up to 2000 by reffering friends
Couple of months ago I downloaded this software http://download.cnet.com/TTMessenger/3000-10440_4-10765202.html?tag=mncol and it gives me 10 free SMS every day to anywhere – it works gr8. Somewhere in the info I read said that you can get up to 30 SMS a day, but donno how..
I was using SMSPup ages ago, but the daily emails and advertising clutter started to get to me. Tried Yakedi for a while as well, but I HATE the fact you have to put “Yakedi=FreeSMS” at the end of your message, it looks ugly and if you choose not to have that, you only get 3 per day, which SUCKS.
Now, my mate got me onto this new site called GetUpGo http://www.getupgo.com. It’s only new, I think it’s still in it’s beta phase or something like that, but so far I am loving the service. If you sign up for a basic membership and then just cruise around the site for a few minutes and perform a few basic tasks like becoming a fan of celebrities you love or becoming an anti-fan of celebrities you hate, you start to earn points, which can be redeemed for free SMS. After only 15 minutes on the site I had earned enough credits to send like 50 SMS, it was unreal, heaps better then the other services and it was actually pretty fun.
cheers peeps,
aussie dude
