Day 12 - State Highway 7 to Hanmer Springs

Decided to cancel the full day Franz Josef Glacier guides booking as the weather forecast was heavy rain after midday and head to Hokitika. Before leaving Fox Glacier drove to Lake Matheson lookout where there was a clear view of Mount Cook.

View some of the landscape photos I took around Fox Glacier, Franz Josef Glacier, Lake Matheson and the rest of South Island

Icebridge Internet next to Ferg's Kayaks With little over an hour to spare before leaving for Hokitika went to Franz Josef with my brother did the walk to the glacier’s Terminal Face (1 hr 50min recommended return by DOC) in 1 hour 10min! It was well worth it as the walk was flat (albeit a bit rocky) all the way and quite accessible as we passed people of all ages from small children to senior citizens making their way there.

playing mini golfAt the Franz Josef township had to look for a place to download my memory card to CD, Scott Base & Franz photos were too expensive, Icebridge Internet next to Ferg’s Kayaks had a much better fee of $2 for memory card reader usage + $2 for 24 min internet usage. This was the cheapest internet access in South Island’s glacier region and where else could you say you’re emailing friends from a red bus with music playing in the background!

I didn’t feel comfortable in the heat of the thermal springs so decided to spend my time in a much more fun way playing in all 3 minigolf courses at Hanmer springs :-)
