The drive from Thames towards Coramandel is in my humble opinion one of the great drives of the world. Think Naples-Positano-Amalfi in Italy but with the ocean on your left hand side, winding through small NZ seaside villages. I did it in Mitsuibishu Lancer rental car and it was fun. In a true sportscar or something truly sporty it would be better still. Thames itself is an easy hour and half drive on the motorway from Auckland. And if you need to stock up on "smalls" there's a Bendon Factory outlet (lingerie and underwear) in the middle of farmland in a factory just before you reach Thames.

Nice article although there are a couple of corrections. "Coromandel" is the correct spelling not "Coramandel" and "Matatoki" not "Motataki" . Also Whangarei is north of Auckland whilst Thames and the "Coro" are south.

It truly is one of the most beautiful places in the world I have seen and I was fortunate enough to grow up there (hence the corrections). The Coromandel has it all, beautiful scenery, mountain ranges, nature, good food, generally friendly locals and on its day some super fun surfing

EDITOR: Thanks for the corrections Daniel, I've made the changes. You don't sound like a Kiwi so you must have moved to Aus. at a young age.
